0

One of the country’s most sought after fraudsters involved in the 2024 KCSE examination malpractices, Collins Kipchumba Kemboi was on Wednesday arrested within Kiamunyi area of Nakuru.

Operating in the guise of a female namely Dorothy Jerop Kiprono, the 23-year-old man had become the nightmare of KNEC officials, having mobilized a following of over 78,000 exam leakage seekers in his Telegram account and over 8,500 in his WhatsApp groups.

In an all-out war to curb the unbecoming practice of cheating, DCI officers attached to KNEC jointly with their Nakuru County counterparts sharpened their claws on the miscreant, pouncing on him like a cornered rat at his abode in Kiamunyi.

The detectives had no business turning the house upside down in search for evidence, as Kemboi was caught pants down with his tools of trade right on the table. His key asset – an Infinix Hot 10 Lite phone – used to fleece unsuspecting grade-seekers was confiscated, alongside several SIM cards, national IDs bearing different names and a driving license.

Probing further, the detectives established that Kemboi is a graduate from a Kenyan university, holding a Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource Management.

He is also employed as a salesperson by an international company, and has his roots in Kaseta area of Sacho in Baringo County.

After a bad day in office, Kemboi is now cooling his heels at Nakuru Central Police Station cells, staring at charges of fraud and unauthorized possession of examination materials.

Rogue Lawyer Arrested Over Ksh 182M Fake Tender Saga

0

Following a complaint made by an American national on a fake tender diddle that saw his companies lose over Ksh 182 million to a ring of scammers in Nairobi, the Operations Support Unit detectives have arrested one key suspect within the precincts of Milimani Law Courts, Nairobi.

Michael Otieno Owano, an advocate and supposed face of Owano Michael & Co. Advocates was arrested yesterday after a session he had attended at court no. 5 for the mention of another criminal case (CR 145/13/2024) in which he is the accused person.

The facts preceeding his arrest date back to 2022 when the proprietor of the American-based company namely Underground Pipeline Rehabilitation Company was lured to jet in the country by one Alvin Alexander (the purported CEO of Orion AST Company), to allegedly meet some government officials and discuss the award of tenders by the Kenyan government.

Oblivious of the prime suspect’s choreographed machinations, the complainant flew into the country, where they held several meetings in various offices and was handed three different fake tender documents as follows; 1. Tender No KCAA/032/2021-2022: Tender for Supply, Installation and Commissioning of Area Control Centre and Disaster Recovery System equipment 2. Tender No ICTA/RFP/03/2022-2022: Provision of Consultancy Services for the Process of Design, Implementing and maintenance of an Information Management System (ISMS) 3. Tender No. MEWNR/T/18/2021-2022. Supply, Delivery, Installation and Commissioning of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS).

In the process, the complainant was hoodwinked to make payments to facilitate the tenders and work permits as part of the conditions to be met before commencing the projects.

Payments amounting to USD 1,617,200 (equivalent to Ksh 182,743,600) were made as instructed by the purported government officials, through four different escrow accounts operated by four law firms as follows;

1. Owano Michael & Company Advocates – $90,000 for legal fees for contracts 1&2)

2. Ollando Misare & Associates, LLP – $30,000 for legal fees, $262,000 and $285,000 for Bid Bond for contract 3)

3. Dennis Onyango & Company Associates – $200,200 for work permits for Orion employees

4. Ouko Angado Co. Advocates – $750,000 for work permits for Orion employees.

What followed the payments were months of being taken in circles, with the once hospitable and respectable members of the syndicate blocking contact and foiling scheduled meetings.

Devastated, the complainant reported the fraud with the DCI and investigations were launched.

The first suspect (Owano Michael), and who is not new to court corridors over such scams, was taken into custody and processed for arraignment today, but was later released on cash bail to await the approval of the charges preferred against him by the ODPP. His accomplices are also being pursued.

Embracing the theme of “Endless Creativity in Craftsmanship”, the brand’s signature elegance was seen in the gold, black and white décor.

At the same time, the guests’ fashion reflected their interpretations of “Glamorously Crafted”.

The evening was graciously hosted by Lyra Aoko, the acclaimed photographer and artist, who arrived dressed in a beautiful pink and green dress.

For 280 years, the Maison has been synonymous with exceptional winemaking through its honoring of terroir, its craftsmanship, and its savoir-faire. Moët & Chandon is also recognized as an innovator, in the cellar and in the vineyards, with sustainability at the heart of its vision for the future.

These unique qualities were highlighted as part of this year’s Champagne Day celebrations spanning eight African countries, as the evening unfolded in three distinct phases, guiding guests through an immersive exploration of Moët & Chandon,

The first phase centered on history, with a heritage wall that highlighted the legacy of Moët & Chandon. Guests were able to trace the brand’s centuries-old influence in the champagne industry and its pioneering role in the evolution of champagne-making.

Guests were then invited to share in a unique dining experience. The table decor beautifully echoed the evening’s theme of endless creativity in craftsmanship, allowing guests to step into a Parisian chic-inspired dining setting embodying the elegance of Moët & Chandon fused with accents of modernity.

Inspired by the meticulous artistry behind every bottle of Moët & Chandon, chefs brought the creative process to life with a menu that featured Aged beef filet medallion and tiger prawns paired with Moet Brut, Macerated berries, pink caviar, and Meringue dust paired with the Moet Imperial rose and finally steamed figs pudding paired with Moet Nectar imperial.

As glasses were filled, Gboyega Ogunfuye delivered an official welcome to Champagne Day before handing the stage over to host Lyra Aoko. We’re delighted to welcome everyone to the Moet and Chandon Champagne Day, celebrating the timeless elegance and craftsmanship of champagne across Africa.

Let’s raise a glass to creativity and unforgettable moments together!”
Lyra Aoko shared their interpretation of Moët & Chandon’s savoir-faire, inspired by their journey to Épernay earlier in the year.

Drawing from the abundance of Kenyan culinary experience, paired with moet and Chandon, Lyra Aoko envisioned these elements as Nyama choma, Mayai Pasua and Tilapia.

Following Lyra Aoko’s speech, a short video showcased the artistry behind the pieces and the experience shared by the seven African artisans in Épernay, offering guests a rare glimpse into their discovery of Moёt & Chandon and the meticulous craftsmanship involved in the creation of their piece.

Guests also shared the opportunity to celebrate their personal achievements of the year by writing down their toasts, and inserting them into golden capsules to take home and revisit as they reach new milestones throughout the years to come.

The event culminated in a vibrant homage to celebration and storytelling, with a performance from J Rabai and the unveiling of the Epernay to Africa photo wall. Just as every bottle of Moët & Chandon carries with it a story – of tradition, artistry, and passion – we are all storytellers at heart.

The collection of memories tells the unique stories of the talented craftsmen and craftswomen who journeyed to the heart of Champagne, Épernay, to experience the savoir-faire of Moët & Chandon; and of the incredible guests, who brought that same spirit of celebration with them in Africa.

As the Moët & Chandon Champagne Day 2024 ended, guests departed with a deepened appreciation for Moët & Chandon’s timeless craftsmanship and savoir-faire that infuses every bottle.

Through the theme of Endless Creativity in Craftsmanship and the curated ‘Glamorously Crafted’ dress code, Moët & Chandon, alongside host Lyra Aoko, honored a toast to craft, community and celebration.

The event was characterized as a memorable tribute to Moët & Chandon’s dedication to blending heritage, innovation, and celebration, creating an unforgettable experience for all who attended.

8 Reasons Why You Earn Well But Have Nothing to Show for it Years Down the Line

0

1. Taking Huge Debts That Overstretch Your Budget

Accumulating large loans—such as mortgages, car loans, or credit card debt—can trap even high-income earners in cycles of repayment. If debt repayments consume a significant portion of income, it becomes difficult to build savings or invest. Over time, high-interest debts can snowball, taking decades to clear, leaving individuals financially strained.

2. Living Paycheck to Paycheck

Earning a high salary offers little advantage if all income is spent as soon as it is earned. This lifestyle leaves no room for savings or investments, making individuals vulnerable to financial emergencies. Without a cushion, any disruption—such as job loss or unexpected expenses—can derail long-term financial goals.

3. Lifestyle Creep

When income increases, it is common for expenses to rise in tandem—known as lifestyle inflation. Many people feel compelled to upgrade their homes, cars, and vacations as their earnings grow. Over time, the elevated lifestyle becomes a financial burden, leaving little to save or invest for future needs.

4. Black Tax

Supporting extended family and friends, often referred to as “black tax,” is a common challenge in many cultures. While these financial obligations come from a place of generosity and duty, they can drain resources meant for personal growth or investments. The constant need to assist others often delays wealth accumulation.

5. Lack of a Long-Term Financial Plan

Without clear, long-term financial goals, it is easy to drift through life financially. A lack of planning often results in missed opportunities for growth, such as retirement savings or investments. Planning provides a roadmap to manage earnings effectively and ensures that resources are aligned with future aspirations.

6. Not Budgeting Your Money

A budget is a tool that assigns a purpose to every dollar earned. Without it, money flows freely, often toward non-essential expenses. Budgeting is essential for managing spending, controlling debts, and ensuring a portion of income is consistently allocated toward savings or investments.

7. Financial Illiteracy

Even high earners can struggle financially if they lack the skills to manage personal finances effectively. Without basic financial knowledge—such as understanding compound interest, investments, or tax planning—it becomes challenging to make sound financial decisions, resulting in missed opportunities to grow wealth.

8. Failing to Save and Invest Consistently

Many individuals earn well but fail to prioritize saving and investing. The absence of a disciplined savings habit results in financial instability, leaving individuals exposed to emergencies. Investments play a crucial role in building wealth, but without them, even high incomes may not translate to financial security over time.

Optiven CEO George Wachiuri Explains the Best Time for Low-Cost Plot Investments

0
How George Wachiuri’s Leadership at Optiven is Shaping the Future of Employment and Community Development

By Dr. George Wachiuri

There’s an age-old saying: the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the second best time is now. This sentiment is equally applicable to real estate, particularly regarding low-cost plots.

But what makes these plots such a compelling opportunity for prospective investors, even amid uncertainty?

1. Low Entry Price – Accessible Yet Valuable

Low-cost plots provide an accessible entry point into property ownership that many aspire to. These affordable parcels promise significant potential for value appreciation.

For as little as Ksh 139,000, you can secure land that not only appreciates over time but also serves as a foundation for future projects or a homestead.

2. Red Soil Advantage – Fertile and Sought After

In Kenya, red soil is synonymous with fertility and versatility, making it highly coveted. Land characterized by red soil is ideal for various uses, including farming, landscaping, and construction.

The increasing demand for such land suggests that its value will only rise over time, enhancing your investment.

3. Deeds Are Ready – Secure Ownership

Investing in low-cost plots comes with the advantage of immediate access to title deeds, ensuring your ownership is secure from the outset.

With the necessary paperwork completed, the process becomes straightforward and reassuring. You’re not merely acquiring land; you’re investing in a stable, legitimate future.

4. Land Banking – Your Secret to Wealth Accumulation

Land banking involves purchasing land to hold onto until its value escalates. In regions with rising demand and limited supply, this strategy can yield substantial returns.

Investing in low-cost plots allows you to diversify your portfolio while embarking on a wealth accumulation journey. Best of all, you don’t need to be a millionaire to begin.

A Word from Dr. George Wachiuri

“At Optiven, we believe that land is a powerful tool for creating generational wealth. Starting small can lead to monumental impacts.

Low-cost plots provide everyone with the opportunity to own a piece of Kenya, invest in their security, and connect with a growing community of forward-thinkers,” states Dr. Wachiuri.

This is your moment to secure a lasting asset. Whether for personal use, future development, or simply enhancing your investment portfolio, low-cost plots are an opportunity you shouldn’t overlook.

Suspect Wanted for Murder of Estranged Lover Nabbed

0

Detectives domiciled at DCI Mbeere South have brought Benson David Mwendwa, a murder suspect before the Embu High Court to face justice.

Mwendwa is accused of orchestrating the gruesome murder of Jane Kilonzi, 44, on September 25, 2024. Her lifeless body was found in a pool of water in Kiambere division of Mbeere South Sub-County, Embu County, bearing severe bruises and with blood streaming from her mouth and nose.

A meticulous investigation by detectives revealed that Kilonzi, a widow, had been living on a farm where her late husband worked as a supervisor.

After the death of the husband in late 2023, Mwendwa was employed as the farm supervisor and was housed in one of Kilonzi’s son’s house. Though he left the job after three months, he continued to stay in the house.

During his stay, a relationship blossomed between Mwendwa and Kilonzi, much to the dismay of her son. This disapproval by the son led to Mwendwa’s eviction from the house, forcing him to find accommodation in Isakho area.

On September 25, 2024, Mwendwa returned to the homestead and shared supper with Kilonzi. After supper, he insisted on spending the night in Kilonzi’s house where she refused, suggesting he sleep in her son’s house as before.

A heated argument ensued, culminating in Mwendwa striking Kilonzi on the head, knocking her unconscious. He then dragged her to the nearby Ciakarigu River, where he continued his brutal assault before leaving her for dead and watching over her all night.

After an intense manhunt, spanning several weeks, Mwendwa was finally apprehended and arraigned before the Embu High Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The suspect is being detained at Majimbo Prison as the case is scheduled for pre-trials on November 19, 2024.

Jared Otieno Allegedly Bribes Prosecution to Gain Freedom in Ksh 300M Fraud Case

0

Jared Kiasa Otieno, a businessman previously charged in a Sh300 million fraud case and linked to money laundering, has reportedly secured a quiet acquittal.

According to allegations, Otieno obtained his freedom through substantial bribery of both prosecution officials and the judiciary.

At one point in the case, the complainant sought to appoint a private prosecutor, but this request was denied by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which also linked Otieno to high-level money laundering.

“We intend to pursue this case to its conclusion, and there is no cause for the complainant to worry,” the ODPP stated at the time, adding that further charges could be amended upon completion of investigations.

Despite these assurances, sources suggest that Otieno allegedly spent large sums to facilitate his acquittal. He has since been accused of continuing to defraud investors through his company.

In previous court hearings, the complainant’s legal team repeatedly raised concerns with the ODPP over the handling of the case.

The charges stemmed from accusations that Otieno, along with sixteen accomplices, defrauded Sh300 million from Sounthorn Chanthavong, a director of the Simoung Group from Laos, by offering a fake gold transaction. Between February 8 and February 25, Otieno and his associates allegedly lured Chanthavong to Kaputei Gardens in Nairobi, where they showcased metal boxes filled with what appeared to be gold bars, giving the impression of a legitimate gold deal.

The operation was conducted through an office under the name Nirone Safe Keeping, further disguising their intentions.

During Otieno’s arraignment, he was charged alongside individuals including Philip Nashon Aroko, Robert Ouko Owiti, Ricky Okoth Ochieng, Peter Omondi, Michael Ochieng, Paul Otieno, and others. All suspects denied the charges when presented before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi.

In a recent development, law enforcement raided Otieno’s residence, allegedly recovering several items associated with the fraudulent operation, including mobile phones, 28 steel boxes, sledgehammer heads, desktop computers, and gold-coated iron bars. During the raid, 15 suspects were arrested, further implicating Otieno’s network in the extensive fraud scheme.
