The six students suspected to be behind the Sunday night’s torching of a dormitory at Maranda high school will remain in custody until 23rd November until investigations were completed.

This is after Bondo court granted the application of Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to hold the students for a further 14 days to enable them conduct thorough investigations.

The students aged between 16 and 18 years had their request to be granted bond quashed by Bondo law court Resident Magistrate (RM) Stella Mathenge who directed that they be held at Bondo police station’s Children Protection Unit because they are minors.

In the application presented by Corporal Suleiman Opondo, the DCI stated that granting the students Bondo will jeopardize investigations.

Opondo revealed that the six, who are the main suspects in the fire incident, were adversely mentioned by their fellow students and therefore would be handy in giving more information on what transpired on Sunday night.

He said that the ministry of education is concerned with rampant fire incidents that have hit schools in the country and through investigation is therefore necessary bring those involved to book.

Fire gutted down a 178 capacity dormitory at Maranda high school on Sunday night destroying property of unknown value in a wave that has raised concern on education stakeholders after a number schools have reportedly been set ablaze across the country.
