Rongai Police Officers Trained on Intersex Rights

Police officers at Ongata Rongai Police Station were on Friday trained on intersex rights.

This is part of a nationwide campaign aimed at improving understanding and protection of intersex persons within law enforcement.

The session was led by Dr. Dennis Wamalwa, Commissioner at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), who was accompanied by Laban Cheruiyot, Deputy Director KNCHR, Peter Maingi, Executive Director of AIP Kenya, Mercy Musomi, Executive Director of the Girl Child Network, and Florence Atieno from JINSIANGU, among other representatives.

The visitors first joined police officers in a tree planting exercise, symbolizing growth, inclusion, and environmental responsibility.

They later held an engagement session where officers were sensitized on Intersex Rights, including:

Understanding intersex identity,Challenges intersex individuals commonly face and best practices for handling intersex persons in custody or during arrest.

The facilitators emphasized respect, dignity, and non discrimination while interacting with intersex persons, aligning the training with Kenya’s human rights standards and constitutional principles.
