Nairobi City County Assembly Speaker Ken Ngondi has rallied ward representatives across the country to support President William Ruto’s push for Universal Health Coverage.
Ngondi who at this year’s Members County Assembly Forum Annual General Meeting held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
The high-level meeting, presided over by President Ruto, brought together legislative leaders from across the 47 counties to deliberate on strengthening devolution and accelerating implementation of national programs at the grassroots.
In his address, President Ruto announced that 29.3 million Kenyans have registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA), with nearly six million having accessed treatment over the past year. He reaffirmed that healthcare remains a constitutional right and called upon county assemblies to spearhead public awareness and oversight to ensure full enrollment.
Speaker Ngondi, a steadfast supporter of the President’s development and national cohesion agenda, positioned Nairobi as a critical player in the success of the health reforms. Leading the Nairobi delegation, he underscored the Assembly’s readiness to align legislative priorities with the national government’s transformation blueprint.
Ngondi emphasized that as the capital city and a major referral hub, Nairobi must take deliberate steps to ensure every eligible resident registers under the Social Health Authority.
“We cannot speak of Universal Health Coverage if our people are not fully registered and informed. Nairobi MCAs will intensify mobilization in every ward,” Ngondi said.
He further reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to oversight and accountability, pledging to support policies that enhance service delivery and safeguard public resources.
Ngondi also praised the President’s emphasis on collaboration between national and county governments, noting that unity of purpose remains key to delivering tangible results for wananchi. He described the forum as a strategic platform to harmonize legislative efforts and strengthen intergovernmental relations.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja were also present, signaling a unified leadership front in advancing the healthcare reform agenda.
Beyond healthcare, the President addressed concerns surrounding motor vehicle-related disbursements and refund processes, assuring leaders that reforms are underway to enhance transparency and efficiency.
As the forum concluded, Ngondi maintained that Nairobi County Assembly would remain firmly aligned with the national government’s reform priorities — particularly in healthcare transformation, fiscal discipline, and national cohesion — positioning the capital as a model for effective legislative support in achieving Universal Health Coverage.
