Safaricom has partnered with Huawei to launch Kenya’s first Fibre to the Room (FTTR) solution, introducing a new generation of home internet technology aimed at improving connectivity, speed, and digital experiences for households.
The launch marks a significant shift from conventional home broadband systems by extending fibre-optic internet connectivity into every room within a home rather than depending on a single Wi-Fi router for distribution.
According to Safaricom, the solution is designed to address the increasing demand for stable and high-speed internet as more Kenyan homes adopt smart devices, streaming platforms, online gaming, remote work systems, and cloud-based technologies that require stronger bandwidth and uninterrupted connectivity.
Unlike traditional Fibre to the Home setups where internet quality weakens further away from the router, FTTR transforms the entire house into a fully integrated fibre network. Every room is fitted with an optical access point that delivers consistent gigabit-level speeds, ultra-low latency, and seamless coverage without dead zones or signal drops.
Safaricom PLC CEO Peter Ndegwa said modern households now require more advanced digital infrastructure capable of supporting an always-connected lifestyle.
He noted that the partnership with Huawei is aimed at delivering a more immersive and reliable connected home experience that aligns with changing consumer needs and the rapid growth of digital lifestyles.
The technology is expected to support high-bandwidth applications such as ultra-high-definition 4K and 8K streaming, online gaming, augmented and virtual reality experiences, video conferencing, smart TVs, security systems, Internet of Things devices, cloud storage, and automated smart home systems.
Among the key features highlighted by Safaricom are whole-home fibre coverage, AI-powered network optimization, ultra-low latency for real-time applications, future-ready smart home integration, and improved installation and performance standards.
The telecommunications company said the introduction of FTTR makes it the first internet service provider in Kenya to offer an end-to-end in-home fibre connectivity solution, strengthening its position in broadband innovation and digital transformation.
The partnership combines Safaricom’s local fibre infrastructure and market reach with Huawei’s global FTTR technologies, including advanced optical terminals, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6+ capabilities, and artificial intelligence-driven network management systems.
Safaricom said the solution will also accelerate the adoption of smart homes in Kenya by creating a stronger foundation for future innovations in home automation, digital entertainment, security systems, and energy management technologies.
