The government is implementing a Sh1 billion last-mile electricity connection programme in Murang’a County that will extend power to an additional 13,000 homes and public institutions, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said.
Kindiki said the electricity programme is among several development initiatives underway across the county, with the government also prioritising roads, water, irrigation, agriculture and healthcare projects.
He spoke on Thursday, October 8, 2026, while addressing residents of the Ithanga area at Kaguku Shopping Centre in Gatanga Constituency after inspecting ongoing development projects in the area.
“Last mile electricity connection projects to light up 13,000 additional homes and public institutions is underway at a cost of 1 billion shillings,” Kindiki said.
The electricity programme is expected to expand access to power in areas that remain outside the existing electricity network, while also supporting public facilities and economic activities dependent on reliable power supply.
Kindiki said ongoing roads, electricity, water and irrigation projects in Murang’a would be fast-tracked to completion, with the government seeking to ensure residents benefit from projects already under implementation.
Agriculture also featured prominently during the public engagement, with Kindiki highlighting government support through subsidised farm inputs and interventions targeting dairy production.
He said farmers have benefited from fertilizer and seed subsidies, while the cost of sexed semen used for artificial insemination of dairy cows has been drastically reduced. The measures are part of efforts to support agricultural productivity in a county where farming remains an important source of household income.

On healthcare, Kindiki said 460,000 Murang’a residents had enrolled for health insurance against a target population of one million people.
He added that hospitals in the area are being equipped under the National Equipment Support Programme, while Community Health Promoters continue to support preventive healthcare services at the community level.
The Deputy President also addressed the government’s ongoing campaign against illicit alcohol and narcotics, saying authorities had stepped up efforts to deal with products and networks considered harmful to public health and economic productivity.
“The Government has stepped up the fight against illicit brews that are harmful to health as well as cartels peddling narcotics, to protect the nation’s economic productivity and future generations,” Kindiki said.
The remarks came as Kindiki continued his public engagements in Gatanga, where he reviewed various government-funded projects and outlined priorities for the county.
He was accompanied by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, nominated MP Sabina Chege, Members of the County Assembly and other leaders.
The Sh1 billion electricity programme adds to other development investments announced for Murang’a, including road construction, fresh produce markets, affordable housing, student accommodation and education infrastructure.
