The race for the Medic Person of the Year award has entered a decisive phase, with Catherine Nyongesa, owner of the Texas Cancer Centre, taking a slight lead as online voting intensifies ahead of the midnight deadline.
Voting, which is being conducted entirely online, has seen members of the public actively participate by casting their ballots and giving reasons for supporting their preferred candidates. Organisers say the level of engagement has been unprecedented, reflecting growing public interest in recognising excellence in Kenya’s medical sector.
Nyongesa, who is widely credited for leading the national fight against cancer through awareness, early screening, and patient support programmes, is reported to be ahead of her closest challengers by fewer than 60 votes, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish.
Also in the running are Dr. Aron Shikuku of Eagle Nursing Home and Dr. Ngugi of Nairobi Hospital, both of whom have continued to attract significant support for their contribution to healthcare delivery and clinical leadership.
With voting closing at midnight today, organisers have urged Kenyans to participate responsibly by voting and explaining their choices as part of the transparent selection process.
The winner of the Medic Person of the Year award will be officially announced later this month, in what is expected to be a high-profile ceremony celebrating Kenya’s outstanding medical professionals.
