Dusit Princess Hotel Nairobi Champions Sustainability Through ‘Tree of Life’ Initiative

Today’s consumers are increasingly conscious about what they consume and where it comes from. As the saying goes, “we are what we eat,” and this awareness is shaping choices with every bite. What we consume impacts not just our health but the entire ecosystem.

At Dusit Princess Hotel Residences Nairobi, customer experience and service delivery are central to its overarching sustainability program, aptly named Tree of Life.

Tree of Life is a reminder of the hotel’s responsibility to help maintain the natural balance needed to sustain future generations. Put simply, the actions taken today have a profound impact on tomorrow.

The initiative comprises 31 criteria aligned with selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as well as industry-specific targets. These targets are categorized into four achievement levels across more than 290 properties worldwide, including Dusit Princess Hotel Nairobi—one of the standout hotels in Nairobi’s Westlands district.

One of the ways the hotel upholds its value chain is through an organic garden located on the property. This tranquil space is used to grow fresh herbs such as rosemary, basil, parsley, mint, and lemongrass. These herbs are essential in helping the hotel maintain its reputation as one of the leading establishments in Westlands offering international cuisine. They support the farm-to-table movement by providing fresh, local ingredients.

The herbs also contain natural antimicrobials that extend food shelf life and help reduce overall food waste. This is complemented by the hotel’s No Bin Policy, introduced by the chef to curb wastage at the staff cafeteria. The initiative encourages staff to serve only the amount of food they are confident they will finish.

The benefits extend beyond the kitchen. The soil quality in the garden has improved significantly due to increased organic matter, eliminating the need for artificial chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides. By moving away from these substances, the hotel ensures zero food contamination while reducing environmental pollution.

Additional key sustainability initiatives include motion-sensor-controlled public area lighting to minimize energy waste. The hotel has installed solar panels to power its hot water systems and uses electromagnetic induction cookers in guest rooms for those who prefer to cook.

Dusit Princess Nairobi has also eliminated plastic water bottles, replacing them with locally sourced refillable glass ones. The hotel has further partnered with Nairobi County to maintain the aesthetic beauty of Mimosa Lane.

As one of the leading boutique hotels in Westlands, Dusit Princess Nairobi remains committed to ensuring that its sustainable practices continue to protect its guests, staff, and the environment in which it operates.
