The Farmers Party has formally announced its intention to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, following what it describes as a series of betrayals and unilateral actions by the ruling alliance.
The decision was communicated in a letter signed by Secretary General Simon Kamangu, issued on April 7, 2025.
The letter, titled “Notice of Intention to Exit from the Kenya Kwanza Coalition,” accuses the coalition of failing to honor the shared vision and commitments that brought the Farmers Party into the alliance on March 23, 2022.
According to the statement, the coalition was formed in good faith with the aim of empowering farmers, ensuring fair prices for produce under the Ministry of Gender Relations (MGR), and uplifting the living standards of ordinary Kenyans through a people-centered economic transformation.
“Our belief in the binding commitments of the Coalition’s manifesto guided our participation. However, it is with deep regret that we note a consistent pattern of dishonesty, political infidelity, and outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement,” the letter states.
The Farmers Party specifically cites the recent unilateral signing of a Broad-Based Government Agreement between the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the final confirmation of what it terms “political conmanship.” The agreement was signed without consultation or involvement of constituent parties like the Farmers Party, the statement added.
Invoking Clause 8 (Termination) of the Coalition Agreement, the Farmers Party’s National Executive Committee unanimously resolved to withdraw from the coalition.
The notice stipulates that the withdrawal will take effect 30 days from the date of the letter.
In the signed statement, Secretary General S’mon Kamangu lamented the breach of trust that has defined the current political landscape within the coalition.
He stressed that the decision to leave was not made lightly, as the Farmers Party had joined Kenya Kwanza with a commitment to a transformative agenda that now appears to have been undermined.
