The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has formally directed all television and radio stations to immediately stop live coverage of ongoing and planned demonstrations across the country. In a notice dated June 25, 2025, the authority cited constitutional provisions and sections of the Kenya Information and Communications Act (1998) as the legal basis for its directive.
According to the letter signed by CA Director General and CEO David Mugonyi, the live broadcasting of protests scheduled for June 25 is contrary to Articles 33(2) and 34(1) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 46I of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998.
“This is therefore to direct all television and radio stations to stop any live coverage of the demonstrations forthwith,” the statement read. The notice further warned that failure to comply would attract regulatory action in accordance with the law.
The authority stated it “looks forward to your continued cooperation,” in a letter addressed to all licensed broadcasters in the country.
This move comes amid rising tension nationwide as Kenyans, largely from the Gen Z movement, take to the streets to mark the one-year anniversary of the historic anti-Finance Bill protests of 2024.
