The 2027 senatorial race in Murang’a County is shaping up to be fiercely competitive after former Ichagaki Ward MCA, Dr. Charles Mwangi, officially announced his bid under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) .
Dr. Mwangi, who served as MCA from 2017 to 2022 and is currently a lecturer at JKUAT, will challenge incumbent Senator Joe Nyutu of the DCP Party , setting the stage for a potentially high-stakes contest in Central Kenya.
Political analysts say Mwangi’s entry is a strategic win for UDA, as the party seeks to consolidate its influence in the region ahead of the 2027 general election. With a background in county politics and academia, Mwangi brings a mix of grassroots experience and professional credibility to the race.
“I believe Murang’a needs leadership that combines practical governance experience with a forward-looking vision. My time in the ward office taught me the value of listening to the people, while my work in academia has sharpened my problem-solving skills,” Mwangi said during an interview.
His campaign also emphasizes youth empowerment, education, and local economic development, while his supporters highlight his record of integrity, citing his 2020 donation of his entire MCA salary to the Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund as evidence of his commitment to public service.
Dr. Mwangi did not shy away from praising UDA and President William Ruto, describing the party as a “force for action and delivery” and crediting the president for championing programs that support youth, local businesses, and economic empowerment.
“I am proud to join a party that has consistently prioritized ordinary Kenyans. Together, we can build a county that is prosperous, inclusive, and forward-looking,” he said.
