Safaricom Foundation has announced the handover of a newly constructed and fully equipped Mother and Child Unit at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital, marking a major milestone in enhancing maternal and child healthcare services in the county.
In a statement shared on its official social media platforms on Tuesday, the Foundation said leaders toured the new facility, interacted with expectant and new mothers, and issued mama packs, reinforcing dignity and quality care for women.
“Yesterday marked an important milestone at Vihiga Teaching & Referral Hospital as we officially handed over a constructed and fully equipped Mother & Child Unit. Leaders toured the unit, interacted with mothers, and issued mama packs, reinforcing dignity and care for expectant and new mothers,” the statement read.
The handover ceremony brought together Vihiga County leadership, healthcare workers, and members of the local community, whose involvement played a key role in the successful delivery of the project.
“The event brought together county leadership, healthcare teams and the community, whose support and involvement, including local job opportunities during construction, contributed to the successful delivery of the project. We celebrate this milestone, reaffirming a shared commitment to strengthening maternal and child healthcare in Vihiga County,” the Foundation added.
The Foundation highlighted that local residents benefited from employment opportunities created during the construction phase, contributing to community empowerment and ownership of the initiative.
Safaricom Foundation noted that the new Mother and Child Unit will improve access to quality healthcare services by providing a modern and well-equipped environment for mothers and newborns.
“This project reflects our broader mission of partnering with communities and county governments to support sustainable development and improve healthcare outcomes across the country,” the Foundation said.
