The internationally acclaimed comedy adventure The Fisherman is set to premiere in cinemas across East Africa on April 3, 2026, with screenings scheduled in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Lusaka.
Written and directed by Zoey Martinson, the film arrives in the region following a successful run on the global festival circuit. It made its world debut at the Venice International Film Festival, where it earned the prestigious UNESCO Fellini Medal. Since then, the production has continued to gain recognition, winning Best Feature at the American Black Film Festival, Best Ghanaian Film at the REFFA Awards, and securing a nomination at the NAACP Image Awards.
Blending magical realism with humor, the film follows Atta Oko, a retired fisherman determined to own his own boat and elevate his status in his village. His life takes an unexpected turn when he teams up with a sarcastic talking fish, launching him on an unpredictable journey from his coastal home to the bustling city of Accra. The story explores themes of ambition, friendship, and resilience through a comedic lens.
Speaking during a pre-screening in Nairobi, Martinson expressed enthusiasm about the film’s East African debut, noting the strong cultural connection audiences have shown. She emphasized that the story reflects the idea of dreaming beyond one’s circumstances and embracing unexpected opportunities.
Producer Kofi Owusu-Afriyie highlighted the strategic decision to launch the film in Kenya and Zambia, citing both countries’ vibrant film industries and supportive infrastructure. He noted that institutions such as the Kenya Film Commission and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation play a key role in strengthening local and regional cinema.
The Nairobi pre-screening was attended by cast members including Ricky Adelayitar, who plays Atta Oko, William Lamptey, and viral dance star Endurance Grand.
Produced by Luu Vision Media and co-produced by Owusu-Afriyie alongside Korey Jackson, The Fisherman continues its global rollout following strong international reception.
Audiences in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Lusaka will be able to watch the film in cinemas starting April 3.
