Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has inspected the ongoing tarmacking of the 26-kilometre Kirwara-Kigio-Jogoo Kimakia/Blue Post road in Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County, being implemented at a cost of Sh861 million.

Kindiki inspected the project on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during a tour of development projects in Gatanga, where he also outlined plans to accelerate road construction across Murang’a County.

The road is among projects being upgraded to bitumen standard as part of a wider programme targeting more than 1,200 kilometres of roads in the county. KeRRA records the Kirwara-Kigio-Jogoo Kimakia section at 26 kilometres, with a contract value of Sh861.15 million.

Kindiki said the road forms part of the broader infrastructure investment planned for Murang’a, with the countywide programme estimated at Sh56 billion.

“These roads are part of the 1,285 kilometers of road network that is prioritized for upgrading to bitumen standard within Muranga County at a cost of 56 billion shillings,” Kindiki said.

The Deputy President said the government had stepped up road upgrading across the country and indicated that implementation would receive additional financial support through the National Infrastructure Fund established under the 2026 law.

“The pace is set to accelerate even more, with significant resources having been ring fenced under the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF) Act of 2026,” Kindiki said.

The National Infrastructure Fund Act, 2026 provides for the establishment and management of the fund, with its stated purpose including scaling up and accelerating national infrastructure development and mobilising private and other sources of infrastructure financing.

In the same constituency, Kindiki announced that tarmacking of the 12-kilometre Gatura-Ngere-Karangi road would commence shortly at an estimated cost of Sh405 million.

The two roads are expected to improve connectivity within Gatanga and link residents to markets, public services and other economic centres once completed.

The road projects form part of a broader development programme that Kindiki said includes investments in housing, fresh produce markets, electricity, water, irrigation and healthcare across Murang’a County.

The Housing Fund is investing Sh27 billion in the county for 26 fresh produce markets, nine affordable housing projects and eight student accommodation facilities. Gatanga is among the beneficiaries, with projects including markets at Ndunyu Chege, Gatunyu, Ithanga, Kaguku and Gatura.

The constituency is also benefiting from the Sh5.4 billion Kakuzi/Mitubiri Housing Project, which is expected to provide 2,000 homes, alongside Sh145 million for 340 beds at Gatanga Technical and Vocational College.

Kindiki’s inspection comes against the backdrop of previous concerns over delays affecting road projects in Gatanga. In a 2025 National Assembly request, Gatanga MP Edward Muriu raised concerns over delayed completion of the Kirwara-Kigio-Jogoo-Kimakia road and other roads in the constituency, citing their impact on transport, trade and access to essential services.

Kindiki was accompanied by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, nominated MP Sabina Chege, MCAs and other leaders during his development tour of the constituency.
