The government has set aside Sh56 billion for the construction and upgrading of 1,265 kilometres of roads in Murang’a County as part of a wider infrastructure programme aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic activity.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the road programme is part of broader government interventions targeting key infrastructure and economic sectors across the county.
Kindiki spoke on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during a public engagement meeting at Kigio Shopping Centre in Gatanga Constituency, where he outlined ongoing and planned development projects in Murang’a.
“The 1,265 kilometer 56 billion shillings target for road construction is part of the wider plan to transform Muranga County and its economy,” Kindiki said.
The road investment comes alongside projects targeting housing, markets, electricity, education, healthcare, water and irrigation, with the government seeking to accelerate the implementation of projects across the county.
Kindiki said the Housing Fund is investing Sh27 billion in Murang’a to support the construction of 26 fresh produce markets, nine affordable housing projects and eight student accommodation hostel facilities.
Gatanga Constituency is among the areas benefiting from the Housing Fund programme. The projects include fresh produce markets at Ndunyu Chege, Gatunyu, Ithanga, Kaguku and Gatura.
The constituency is also set to benefit from the Sh5.4 billion Kakuzi/Mitubiri Housing Project, which will provide 2,000 homes. In the education sector, Sh145 million has been allocated for 340 beds at Gatanga Technical and Vocational College, while Sh100 million will support the upgrading of facilities at Kihumbuini School.
Electricity connectivity is another component of the development programme. Kindiki said last-mile electricity projects worth Sh1 billion are currently underway and will connect an additional 13,000 households and public amenities.
The expansion of electricity access is expected to complement other infrastructure investments by supporting households, institutions and economic activities in areas being connected to the national grid.
On healthcare, Kindiki said 460,000 residents had enrolled in the Universal Medical Insurance Scheme administered through the Social Health Authority, against a target population of one million people in the county.
The figures were presented as part of an update on the government’s development priorities during the public engagement at Kigio.
Kindiki said the projects were being implemented alongside other interventions in the county as the government works to improve infrastructure and access to public services.
He was accompanied by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, nominated MP Sabina Chege, Members of the County Assembly and other leaders.
The road programme forms part of a broader development agenda in Murang’a, with the government linking improved transport infrastructure to access to markets, public services and economic opportunities across the county.
