BIC Kicks Off Nairobi Scrabble Bee Championship to Boost Literacy and Creativity Among Students

BIC, a global leader in stationery, lighters, and shavers, has partnered with Fruity Schools Africa to launch the Scrabble Bee Championship 2025, a city-wide educational initiative designed to enhance literacy, cognitive skills, and academic excellence among learners in Kenya.

Running until the end of the year, the phased program targets private school students in grades seven and eight, promoting learning through creativity and play — a reflection of BIC’s ongoing commitment to encouraging creativity in education.

This initiative builds on BIC’s global pledge to improve learning conditions for 250 million students by the end of 2025 under its sustainable development program, Writing the Future Together.

Expressing her delight, Paloma Lengema, General Manager of BIC East Africa, said:

> “This partnership with Fruity Schools Africa speaks to the core of our purpose. As a global stationery brand, education remains at the forefront for us. Through such initiatives and partnerships, we continue to leverage our product portfolio to provide students with the tools and experiences they need to perform academically and express themselves beyond the classroom. Education drives progress and development — and incorporating creativity makes learning more engaging and innovative, leading to a better future for all. We’re proud to play a role in that journey.”

The Scrabble Bee Championship brought together students from 50 schools across Nairobi in a three-day competition that tested their language skills, encouraged healthy competition, and fostered intellectual growth.

Ahead of the tournament, teachers received training to equip them with the knowledge and resources necessary to lead Scrabble activities within their schools. The top five winning schools will be recognized for promoting creativity in education, with BIC providing gadgets, laptops, and other learning resources to enhance their school facilities.

Individual winners will also receive special prizes, with first place taking home a Lenovo tablet and second place earning a 16-gear mountain bike.

Commenting on the occasion, Kennedy Odoyo, Founder and CEO of Fruity Schools Africa, said:

> “The Scrabble Bee is more than just a game — it’s an initiative that sharpens minds and builds character. We’re immensely proud of its success. Partnering with BIC, an organization that truly understands the importance of learning tools, is a game-changer. This collaboration proves that the private sector plays a vital role in shaping education. Together, we’re not just hosting a championship — we’re investing in the cognitive capacity and competitive spirit of Kenya’s next generation of leaders.”

The Scrabble Bee Championship 2025 marks the first phase of this collaborative educational initiative. BIC Kenya remains dedicated to supporting learners throughout their academic journey through various programs, including Buy Me and BIC Will Donate a Pen and Express Myself with My BIC Pen, which have positively impacted hundreds of teachers and more than 80,000 students to date.
