Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has flagged off electricity connection materials for two areas in Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County, in a KSh14.7 million project expected to connect 151 additional households to the national power grid.
The projects cover Kamagoti/Muthangaini, where 95 homes are expected to receive electricity at a cost of KSh8.7 million, and Njubi, which will see 56 households connected at a cost of KSh6 million.
Kindiki announced the initiative on Friday, October 16, 2026, saying the works form part of a wider last-mile electrification programme targeting 10,800 households across Kirinyaga County.
The countywide programme has been allocated KSh845 million, with Ndia Constituency set to receive KSh385 million to facilitate electricity connections for 3,000 households.
Government Targets More Household Connections
The latest projects are part of the government’s wider push to expand electricity access, particularly in areas where households remain disconnected from the national grid.
According to Kindiki, approximately 32,000 households in Kirinyaga County have been connected to electricity since September 2022.
The additional connections are expected to improve access to power for domestic use, support small businesses and create opportunities for residents to engage in income-generating activities that depend on reliable electricity.
Electricity access can also support local enterprises, including shops, workshops and small-scale agro-processing businesses, while improving the ability of households to use electrical appliances and access digital services.
Ndia Allocated KSh385 Million
The allocation of KSh385 million to Ndia is intended to support connections for 3,000 households under the broader electrification programme.
The planned works in Kamagoti/Muthangaini and Njubi represent part of that wider investment, with the two projects expected to benefit 151 homes once completed.
The government has increasingly presented electricity connectivity as a component of its development agenda, alongside road construction, affordable housing and investment in public services.
The impact of the programme will depend on the completion of the connections and the ability of households to afford electricity consumption after being connected.
The latest flag-off adds to the government’s infrastructure commitments in Kirinyaga as it continues to highlight development delivery ahead of the 2027 General Election.
