Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has launched the tarmacking of the Kiania-Kiaragana-Kaharo and Rwamuthambi-Nderiti roads in Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County, as the government advances its road infrastructure programme in the region.

The projects form part of a wider plan to upgrade 571 kilometres of roads across Kirinyaga County at a projected cost of KSh42 billion, according to figures shared by Kindiki during his visit on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The Deputy President said 472 kilometres of the prioritised roads were progressing at a cost of KSh37 billion, highlighting infrastructure development as a key component of the government’s efforts to improve connectivity and stimulate economic activity.

“Modern road infrastructure is a crucial enabler of economic development, trade and dignified travel for the people,” Kindiki said.

Roads Target Better Market Access

The tarmacking of the Kiania-Kiaragana-Kaharo and Rwamuthambi-Nderiti roads is expected to improve transport links for residents, businesses and farmers in the surrounding areas.

Improved road infrastructure can reduce travel difficulties, support the movement of agricultural produce and connect communities to markets, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services.

In a county where agriculture is a key source of livelihoods, better roads are particularly important for farmers transporting tea, coffee, milk and other produce to buyers and processing facilities.

The projects also form part of the government’s broader infrastructure agenda, which includes upgrading roads in areas that have experienced limited access to modern transport networks.

KSh42 Billion Countywide Road Programme

The government has prioritised 571 kilometres of roads for tarmacking across Kirinyaga County, with the programme estimated to cost KSh42 billion.

Of that total, 472 kilometres are reported to be progressing under projects valued at KSh37 billion. The figures indicate the scale of the planned road investment, although completion timelines and the status of individual road sections will determine when residents begin to experience the full benefits.

The programme is expected to improve connectivity between rural communities and major trading centres, potentially supporting commerce and reducing the challenges associated with transporting goods.

Infrastructure at the Centre of Development Agenda

Kindiki’s launch of the two road projects comes as the government highlights infrastructure spending as part of its development record ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The administration has cited road construction, electricity connections, affordable housing and agricultural reforms as key areas of investment in Kirinyaga and other parts of the country.

For residents, the immediate focus will be on the implementation of the announced projects and whether improved roads translate into easier travel, better market access and reduced transport costs.

The Kiania-Kiaragana-Kaharo and Rwamuthambi-Nderiti road works add to the list of infrastructure projects being advanced in Kirinyaga County under the wider road-tarmacking programme.
