Kindiki Reveals Sh290m Plan for KMTC Karuri Hostel

The government is set to invest Sh290 million in a 580-bed student hostel at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Karuri Campus in Kiambaa Constituency, Kiambu County.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the Housing Fund will separately support the construction of the student accommodation facility as the government moves to expand infrastructure at the new medical training institution.

Kindiki made the announcement on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, during an inspection of construction works at the proposed KMTC Karuri Campus, where he highlighted the government’s plans to increase training opportunities for medical professionals.

The 580-bed hostel will provide accommodation for students enrolled at the campus, addressing one of the key infrastructure needs expected to arise as the institution expands its training capacity.

The Sh290 million investment will be separate from the Sh200 million allocated for the establishment of the KMTC Karuri Campus, bringing the combined value of the two projects to approximately Sh490 million.

Kindiki said Sh70 million has already been injected into the main campus project, with the funds being used to construct the administration and tuition blocks, library facilities and skills laboratories.

The Deputy President said the establishment of the campus is aimed at increasing the number of trained medical professionals available to support Kenya’s Universal Health Care system.

He noted that medical professionals trained at the institution will be important in providing facility-based healthcare and handling patients referred from communities by Community Health Promoters.

Kindiki said the national government, in partnership with county governments, has hired 107,000 Community Health Promoters, who form part of the frontline healthcare system at the community level.

The expansion of medical training facilities is therefore expected to complement the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery by increasing the pool of professionals available to serve in health facilities.

During the visit, Kindiki inspected the ongoing construction works at the Karuri campus and pledged additional government support to ensure the project is completed on time.

The Deputy President was accompanied by Kiambaa MP John Kawanjiku, Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, Members of the County Assembly, local leaders and members of the KMTC fraternity.
