Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has witnessed the commencement of construction of the new Nithi River Bridge along the Nairobi–Embu–Meru Highway, with the project expected to cost Sh7.5 billion.
The bridge, which will stand 100 metres high and stretch 880 metres, is intended to replace the existing crossing that Kindiki says has been a dangerous black spot since it was constructed in 1985.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026, during an event in Nithi, Maara Constituency, Tharaka Nithi County, Kindiki said the bridge had been linked to numerous fatal accidents, with vehicles plunging into the river over the years.
He said residents had called for a safer crossing for about four decades, adding that the new structure would address long-standing concerns over safety along the busy highway.

The project will also include 2.7 kilometres of approach roads connecting Marima and Mitheru centres, improving access around the bridge and linking nearby communities.
Kindiki said the Ruto administration had committed to constructing a new bridge after assuming office but that the complexity of the design and the unexpectedly high project cost had delayed implementation.
According to the Deputy President, funding for the project has now been secured and ring-fenced to support construction.
He said the planned construction period of 24 months would be shortened where possible, while maintaining the quality of works and the engineering standards required for the infrastructure project.
The new bridge is expected to improve safety on the Nairobi–Embu–Meru Highway, a key transport corridor serving travellers and businesses moving between Nairobi and the eastern and northern parts of the country.
However, the project’s progress and eventual impact will depend on the timely completion of construction and adherence to the required engineering and safety standards.
