Nairobi County Unveils first ever Nutrition and Cancer Care Facility

Nairobi City County is set to make history with the establishment of a groundbreaking health facility that will house the county’s first dedicated nutritional laboratory, a comprehensive oncology centre and a major dialysis unit, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve access to specialised healthcare services.

The new establishment is located at the Mutuini Level IV Hospital and is inspected to be a game changer in healthcare service provision in the capital city.

The ambitious project was highlighted during an inspection tour led by Chief Officer for Wellness, Nutrition and School Feeding, Amina Mohammed, who visited the facility alongside senior nutrition officials and development partners to assess preparedness ahead of its commissioning.

Speaking during the visit, Mohammed described the facility as a game changer that will transform the management of nutrition-related illnesses while strengthening Nairobi’s capacity to provide specialised treatment for some of the country’s most pressing health challenges.

At the heart of the project is the County’s first nutritional laboratory, a facility expected to revolutionise the diagnosis and treatment of malnutrition among children and other vulnerable groups.

The laboratory will be equipped to conduct advanced nutritional assessments, formulate therapeutic feeds and manufacture specialised nutrition products for newborns and children requiring critical nutritional support.

Health experts say the move will significantly reduce dependence on external suppliers while enabling faster response to nutrition emergencies within the county.

The facility also boasts expanded clinical nutrition spaces designed to provide comprehensive nutritional services, including counselling, assessment and follow-up care.

In a major technological breakthrough, the county is introducing a tele-nutrition programme that will allow healthcare workers to remotely monitor and support patients suffering from malnutrition from the comfort of their homes.

The system, which is integrated into the Digital Health Authority’s platform, will utilise Community Health Promoters to track patients living in informal settlements and underserved communities.

Through digital consultations and monitoring, healthcare providers will be able to identify complications early and refer patients requiring advanced medical attention to higher-level facilities.

County officials say the initiative is expected to bridge healthcare gaps in low-income areas where access to specialised nutritional services remains limited.

Beyond nutrition services, the facility is being positioned as one of Nairobi’s leading centres for specialised healthcare.

Plans are underway to establish a state-of-the-art oncology centre that will offer comprehensive cancer diagnosis and treatment services under the Nairobi City County Government.

Once operational, the facility will become the county’s first fully-fledged cancer treatment centre, easing pressure on national referral hospitals and reducing the burden faced by patients who often travel long distances seeking treatment.

The project will also feature 16 dialysis machines, making it one of the largest county-run renal care units in the country.

The expansion comes at a time when cases of kidney disease continue to rise, increasing demand for affordable dialysis services.

To further enhance patient care, the facility has incorporated separate Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and High Dependency Units (HDUs) for male and female patients, ensuring specialised treatment in a dignified environment.

Officials say the development reflects Nairobi County’s commitment to investing in modern healthcare infrastructure through strategic partnerships and supportive supervision.

As the county moves closer to commissioning the facility, residents are expected to benefit from improved access to nutrition, cancer and kidney care services, bringing life-saving treatment closer to thousands of families and reinforcing Nairobi’s position as a leading healthcare hub in the region.
