Newsline Media Raises Concern Over Skills Gap in Media Training

Media training institutions have been urged to address the growing mismatch between classroom theory and practical skills to improve graduate employability in the media industry.

Speaking during an interview, Miss Faith Mukundi, Managing Director of Newsline Media and Training Agency, said universities must urgently strengthen practical exposure for media and film students in line with evolving industry demands.

She noted that many graduates continue to struggle in the job market due to limited hands-on experience in real production environments despite having strong academic backgrounds.

Mukundi said the rapid growth of digital platforms and citizen journalism has transformed the media landscape, requiring institutions to produce adaptable and practically skilled professionals.

She emphasized that Newsline Media is responding to this gap by offering structured attachment programmes that expose students to real-world industry practice.

The agency provides attachment opportunities in journalism, media production, film and video production, public relations, graphic design, information technology, animation, and cyber security, allowing students to gain practical experience across multiple creative and digital fields.

Mukundi further observed that inadequate training equipment and limited practical resources in many institutions continue to hinder effective skills development.

She said bridging the gap between theory and practice is key to improving youth employability and strengthening the country’s media industry.

Despite initial challenges during the establishment of the attachment programme, she noted that the initiative has since impacted more than 200 professionals across various media and communication fields.
