Pwani University Students Tap Into Creator Economy at Safaricom Masterclass

More than 500 students from Pwani University on Friday benefited from a high-energy digital empowerment session after Safaricom, in partnership with Sprite, hosted the “Hook’d on Fresh” content creation masterclass aimed at equipping young people with practical digital skills.

The session brought together leading digital creators and industry experts who shared insights into the growing creator economy. Students were taken through practical demonstrations and interactive discussions on how to leverage social media platforms, build strong personal brands, and turn online content into sustainable income streams.

Participants described the training as eye-opening, noting that it changed their perception of social media from a purely entertainment platform to a potential source of income and entrepreneurship.

“I have always owned a smartphone and occasionally made TikTok videos, but I never knew how to make money from my content,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student at Pwani University. “Today’s session has been an eye-opener. Going forward, my content will not just be for entertainment but also a source of income to support myself instead of relying on my parents for pocket money.”

He also welcomed Safaricom’s affordable S-Hook bundles, saying they will help students stay connected and consistently share content online.

Beyond content creation, the students were also trained on financial literacy, including saving and investing their earnings to promote long-term financial stability and wealth creation.

Industry experts including Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe, and Vallery provided practical tips on transforming online creativity into profitable ventures, covering trends in social media, branding, and digital entrepreneurship.

In addition, Phelister Wanjiru from Safaricom’s Wealth Management team introduced the Ziidi Money Market Fund, encouraging students to adopt disciplined saving habits as part of their financial growth journey.

Speaking during the event, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer Fawzia Ali Kimanthi said the initiative is designed to equip young people with both skills and platforms to turn creativity into livelihoods.

The “Hook’d on Fresh” campaign is a creator-focused programme aimed at empowering Kenyan youth with skills, tools, and inspiration to thrive in the digital economy. The Pwani University edition follows previous activations at Africa Nazarene University, the University of Eldoret, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
