By day, it is a menu. By the end of its first life, it becomes something else entirely.
At Utamu Restaurant, the menu arrives looking less like a conventional restaurant card and more like a newspaper.
Called the Utamu Gazette, the recyclable-paper menu is part of a refreshed dining experience at ibis Styles Nairobi Westlands — and its story does not end when the bill arrives.
Through a partnership with Green Pencil, used Gazette pages are transformed into pencils used during meetings and conferences at the hotel.
It is a simple idea with an unusual afterlife: a menu that helps a diner choose a meal can eventually become the tool someone uses to put an idea on paper.
More Than a Menu

The Gazette is at the centre of Utamu’s effort to rethink the details of the dining experience.
The restaurant has recently undergone a refresh, introducing a more contemporary and inviting setting for casual meals, business lunches and social gatherings.
The changes are not limited to the décor. Utamu is positioning the experience around three familiar elements — food, service and atmosphere — while using the Gazette to add something less expected.
Where Food Makes the Headlines
If the Gazette provides the concept, the food remains the main story.
Utamu’s menu features a selection of bites and familiar favourites prepared around flavour and presentation, giving diners options for everything from a quick meal to a more leisurely catch-up.
Whether dining alone, meeting colleagues or sharing a meal with friends, the emphasis is on making the food the centrepiece of the experience.
The People Behind the Experience
There is another ingredient that does not appear on the menu: service.
Utamu’s Heartists are part of the restaurant’s effort to create a welcoming and relaxed environment, with attentive service intended to make guests feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.
It is an approach built around a simple premise — a good meal should leave more than a satisfied appetite.
A Small Idea With a Second Chapter
The Gazette gives Utamu’s refresh its most distinctive element.
Rather than treating the menu as something disposable, the restaurant has designed it to have a second use. Once diners have finished reading it, the paper enters a new stage through the Green Pencil partnership.
That turns a routine part of eating out into a small sustainability story — one that moves from the dining table to the meeting room.
For guests, the experience begins with choosing what to eat. For the Gazette, the story continues long after the meal.
Turning the Page
Utamu’s latest chapter is therefore less about simply changing how the restaurant looks and more about rethinking how a dining experience can be presented.
A refreshed setting, flavour-led menu, attentive service and a newspaper that eventually becomes a pencil come together to create an experience designed to be remembered.
At Utamu, even the menu has a story after the meal.
