Victor Wanyama Mentors Safaricom Chapa Dimba Young Talent

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama led a football and mentorship masterclass for the Safaricom Chapa Dimba Season 4 All-Stars at Nairobi’s Ligi Ndogo Grounds, as preparations begin for the launch of Season 5 of the youth football tournament.

The session brought together young footballers from across the country for a day of practical training, career guidance, and mentorship, with Wanyama drawing from his professional football journey to inspire the players.

The masterclass forms part of the build-up to the official launch of Chapa Dimba Season 5 on May 9 in Kisumu County, as Safaricom continues to position the programme as a key grassroots football development platform.

Speaking during the session, Wanyama emphasized discipline, consistency, and hard work as critical factors in building a successful football career. He encouraged the players to remain focused and maximise opportunities available through youth development programmes.

“If opportunities like Safaricom Chapa Dimba were available when I was starting out, I would have gone even further in my career,” said Wanyama. “I urge the players to work hard, stay disciplined, and take every opportunity seriously because you never know who is watching.”

Beyond football, the retired midfielder also spoke to the players about financial responsibility, urging them to cultivate saving and investment habits early in their careers.

Wanyama, who recently announced his retirement from professional football and is currently pursuing UEFA coaching licences, also interacted directly with the players during on-pitch drills, demonstrating techniques and offering real-time feedback.

The session highlighted the growing role of mentorship in youth football development, particularly as local programmes increasingly combine talent identification with life skills training and career guidance.

Safaricom’s Chapa Dimba initiative continues to expand its footprint in grassroots football, with the programme focusing on nurturing young talent while creating pathways for exposure, training, and personal development.
