Rongai parliamentary aspirant Mercy Chebet Chelel has demanded a public apology and KSh50 million in damages from fellow politician Tonny Kipkurui over alleged defamatory remarks made during a fundraiser in Nakuru County.
Through her lawyers, Danstan Omari & Associates Advocates, Chelel has issued a demand letter accusing Kipkurui of making derogatory and discriminatory statements against her during a harambee held in Menengai West Ward on May 24, 2026.
According to the letter, the remarks, allegedly made in the Kalenjin language, suggested that Chelel, also known as Mercy Chebet Chebil, should undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) before she could be considered fit to vie for the Rongai parliamentary seat.
The lawyers argue that the statements portrayed Chelel as unworthy of leadership and incapable of leading men because she was allegedly uncircumcised. They contend that the remarks were malicious, misogynistic, and intended to undermine her reputation and growing political influence within the constituency.
The demand letter further alleges that Kipkurui, described as a senior employee of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) based in Mombasa and an aspiring Member of Parliament, has been engaged in a sustained campaign aimed at frustrating Chelel’s political ambitions.
Chelel also claims that on May 26, 2026, while attending a funeral in Rongai Constituency, she was allegedly attacked and harassed by individuals acting at the behest of the politician. According to the letter, the individuals disrupted the funeral proceedings, while local administrative officials allegedly failed to take appropriate action and instead shielded those responsible.
Her legal team argues that the alleged statements promote harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation, contrary to the Constitution of Kenya and principles of equality, dignity, and non-discrimination.
Citing Article 2(4) of the Constitution, the advocates state that any custom or practice inconsistent with constitutional values is null and void, adding that advocacy for practices that demean women violates fundamental rights and freedoms.
Chelel is demanding an unequivocal admission that the statements were made, together with a public apology to be issued within seven days of receipt of the demand letter.
In addition, she is seeking KSh50 million in compensation for the alleged damage to her reputation, dignity, and political career.
The lawyers have warned that failure to comply with the demands within the stipulated period will result in legal proceedings being filed against Kipkurui without further notice.
The allegations have not been tested in court, and Mr. Kipkurui had not publicly responded to the claims at the time of publication.
