Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has inspected the ongoing construction of Kangangi Fresh Produce Market in Kiambu Town, with the Sh267 million project currently 30 per cent complete.

Kindiki conducted the inspection on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, as the government continues to invest in modern markets aimed at improving trading facilities and supporting small-scale traders across the country.

The market is among nearly 600 similar facilities the government says it is developing across Kenya as part of efforts to modernise trading infrastructure and create economic opportunities for traders and other businesses.

The Deputy President said the government’s Housing Fund programme had expanded beyond residential housing to include markets, student hostels and institutional housing.

According to Kindiki, projects under the programme are now valued at approximately Sh800 billion, with the initiative supporting employment in the construction sector.

He said the programme had created opportunities for people who were previously unemployed, with an estimated 1.1 million people now employed through the Housing Fund-related developments.

“The construction industry is on the rise, the built environment changing and Kenya’s skyline in every town bears the mark of housing units being erected using the Housing Fund,” Kindiki said.

The Kangangi Fresh Produce Market is expected to provide traders with a modern facility for conducting business once construction is completed.

Modern markets are intended to improve trading conditions, provide more organised spaces for vendors and strengthen the infrastructure supporting local commerce.

The investment also reflects the government’s broader strategy of combining housing development with supporting infrastructure and employment creation.

However, the market’s completion timeline was not provided in the Deputy President’s announcement.

The project’s progress will be key in determining when traders in Kiambu Town can begin using the facility and benefit from the planned improvements to market infrastructure.
