Building on the success of its recent campus initiatives, Samsung Electronics East Africa hosted a digital media and artificial intelligence (AI) technology masterclass at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), aimed at equipping the next generation of innovators with future-ready digital skills.
The masterclass attracted 180 students, reinforcing Samsung’s commitment to nurturing digital talent and preparing young people for careers in the rapidly evolving technology sector.
Driven by a shared vision to unlock the potential of Kenya’s youth, Samsung Electronics East Africa launched the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) at JKUAT in November 2025 through a strategic partnership with the university. The global programme is designed to equip students with practical digital skills and create new pathways into the fast-growing digital economy.
The first cohort comprises 80 students enrolled in a three-month learning programme under the Samsung Innovation Campus. To prepare them for opportunities in the AI era, the cohort has been divided into two specialised tracks, with 40 students studying Artificial Intelligence and 40 students pursuing Advanced Coding and Programming.
Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will receive a diploma awarded by JKUAT, equipping them with industry-relevant skills and recognised academic credentials.
“Behind every great piece of code or AI solution is a young person looking for an opportunity to demonstrate their potential,” said Dr. Lawrence Nderu, Head of the School of Computing and JHUB at JKUAT.
“This partnership with Samsung is significant because it recognises our students as individuals with unique ambitions. By combining our academic expertise with practical industry experience through JHUB Africa, we are preparing these young innovators to graduate with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to make a meaningful impact in the digital economy.”
The masterclass also welcomed 70 additional students who had participated in Samsung’s on-campus recruitment programme earlier in the academic term, giving them an opportunity to strengthen their digital and creative skills while learning from industry experts.
A key highlight of the event was an interactive panel discussion exploring the intersection of technology, innovation and digital content creation.
Photography and content creation expert Edwin Waweru shared practical insights into visual storytelling, lighting techniques and mobile photography, while Samsung Electronics East Africa Product Manager Ryan Mule demonstrated how emerging technologies and AI-powered tools are transforming content creation and empowering creators to work more efficiently.
Participants also heard inspiring success stories from industry professionals, including leading digital content creator Wololo TV, who shared his journey of building a successful personal brand, growing an online audience and creating engaging digital content in an increasingly competitive landscape.
The event also featured a motivational session by Josephat Ochiel, Regional Service Manager at Samsung Electronics East Africa and a graduate of the Samsung Innovation Campus, who encouraged students to take full advantage of the programme.
“Standing here reminds me of where these students are today. The Samsung Innovation Campus, formerly known as Samsung Academy, did more than equip me with technical skills—it transformed the way I viewed my career. Moving from the classroom into a corporate role at Samsung has been a rewarding full-circle journey. My message to every student is simple: the skills, mentorship and opportunities you receive through this programme can shape your future. Embrace them fully because they have the potential to define your career,” said Ochiel.
Through its partnership with JKUAT, Samsung Electronics East Africa continues to invest in digital literacy, innovation and employability by equipping young Kenyans with the knowledge and practical skills needed to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven economy.
